Spring comes
The leaves grow
Maybe I can learn something
When I began to photograph in a neighbor's yard, I was especially interested in an old fig tree standing in one corner. The shapes of the fig leaves were beautiful. When I looked carefully, I could see each leaf; the leaves were alike but each was different. I realized that this tree, like its owner, was a unique individual with decades of life experiences.
I used infrared film to capture the luminosity and vitality of the foliage. Since the film is sensitive to heat as well as to light it shows living foliage to be light-colored and animated. When lit from behind, the leaves do not seem to be solid; they appear fragile, even vulnerable. I think of these images as fleeting glimpses.
